Set the Scene
Situated on an unassuming corner of York Boulevard in Eagle Rock, chef Ari Kolender’s Queen’s Raw Bar and Grill offers a quintessential seafood experience in LA. The menu showcases obvious Southern influences inspired by Kolender’s upbringing in Charleston, with classic bites like shrimp and grits and buttery hushpuppies. Though there is an airy patio that offers additional seating, the jewel box dining room creates the most charming ambiance with a stained glass-adorned oyster bar displaying a variety of shellfish on ice. Rows of unique wine bottles kiss the top of vaulted ceilings, while vintage photos and artwork create a stylish gallery wall above tiny bistro tables. It’s sophisticated enough for a date night, while simultaneously being laid-back enough for a quick bite after work.
What the Food is Like
No visit to Queen’s is complete without a platter of the rotating oysters. However, the Point Break platter comes with eight oysters, a shrimp cocktail, the seasonal crudo, and two anchovies on a stick, offering a bit more variety across the menu’s raw bar section. The oyster shooters are a fun and tasty way to catch a buzz with your choice of beer or mezcal, but the tuna tostada is a bright and timeless way to start any meal.
Moving on to the cooked dishes, the shrimp and grits is Chef Kolender’s favorite entrée, but for a bite you won’t soon forget, order the bluefin tuna frites. A tender, seared tuna fillet is drenched in the creamiest ponzu-infused beurre blanc and accompanied by crispy French fries with a side of chili garlic aioli. Don’t be surprised if you have to pause and process after the first bite. Though the menu is anchored around seafood, non-pescatarian options include the signature pimento cheeseburger, hanger steak, and beautiful grilled Sicilian artichokes.
Let’s Talk About the Drinks
In addition to a solid selection of refreshing wines that are curated to pair well with the seafood-heavy menu, Queen’s serves a classic array of cocktails, many of which have been enhanced with a creative twist. Martinis are given special attention, and every Monday, they cost just $10 all night long. The Swashbuckler martini is a gin-based sipper made with a house blend of oyster and olive brine—it’s hard to imagine a more perfect pairing for your shellfish platter. If you prefer something fruity and fresh, consider the Queen’s mojito or house margarita with apricot liqueur.
Final Thoughts
Queen’s Raw Bar & Grill is everything you could possibly want in a neighborhood restaurant. My only quarrel is that it’s not closer to where I live (but my wallet is likely thankful).
