Set the Scene
A welcome addition to Melrose Hill’s ever-growing restaurant scene, Bar Etoile opened to high praise toward the end of 2024. This moody French bistro is elegant and modern, but still possesses the same laid-back ambiance and friendly service required of a neighborhood spot. A stylish, tiled exterior is lined with a handful of outdoor tables reminiscent of Paris’ iconic cafe seating, but inside, a sleek, metal bar sits front and center. On one side, baby blue curved booths offer more intimate privacy, and on the other, cream-colored banquettes sit under a carefully curated gallery wall of antique art and vintage decor. Before the sun sets, large, industrial windows let in an ample amount of natural light, but come dusk, candlelit tables create a gentle glow against the otherwise shadowy setting.
Whats the Food is Like
The most famous dish here is the cheese tart, and for good reason. This savory appetizer looks more like a standard slice of cheesecake topped with a layer of fresh matcha, but the green powder on top is actually a vibrant chive blend. Each bite reveals an umami-rich flavor that complements the creamy cheese filling and thin, cracker crust. Bar Etoile’s menu is seasonally driven and items are consistently shifting, but the tart is a longtime staple you can always expect to find.
Other signature staples include the Caesar beef tartare, which is served on a rustic slice of sourdough, and the tender steak frites topped with a five-pepper au poivre. The crudo feature changes regularly, but it's always worth exploring if you’re in the mood for a light and fresh appetizer.
Let’s Talk About the Drinks
Natural and unique wines take center stage at Bar Etoile, but the full bar ensures that you can order almost any classic cocktail. The martinis can be customized exactly to your liking, but the bourbon-based New Fashioned is a fun take on a timeless tipple. You can always expect to find new and exciting wines available by the glass, and though there are only a couple of options under each section (i.e. white, red, skin contact, etc.), the chosen pours are carefully curated with intention. If nothing seems to catch your eye, simply order a bottle (there are way more varietals to explore). I recommend starting off with a dirty gin martini before moving on to a glass of orange wine or a chilled red.
Final Thoughts
Though you’ll rightfully come for the cheese tart, you’ll stay for the ambiance and natural wines.
