A First Look at The Sagaponack, the Hamptons’ Newest Beach Retreat

Hotel Snapshot

Once a quiet patchwork of potato fields and fishing villages, the Hamptons have long since traded their rustic charm for something far more refined. What began as a low-key summer escape for New York’s artists and intellectuals has shifted into something closer to Succession than Steinbeck—where farm stands stock organic truffle aioli and the beaches are scattered with more Céline sandals than seashells. Still, for all the gloss and Gatsby-esque sunset soirées, the area hasn’t completely lost its charm. Windswept dunes, weathered shingles, and the briny scent of sea air are subtle but steady reminders that you’ve left the city behind. The latest boutique stay to land in 11962—the second most expensive ZIP code in the country—taps into that contrast with ease. The Sagaponack walks the line between laid-back luxury and coastal cool. It’s the Hamptons at their best: equal parts charm, design, and just enough smugness to know you’ve made it.

Design & Character

The Sagaponack is what happens when a classic Hamptons beach house decides to trade in its flip-flops for something a bit sharper. Formerly the Wainscott Inn, it underwent a $4 million renovation that transformed the space. The redesign has a coastal palette, with layered textures, deep greens, sage, and navy that feel pulled straight from the dunes and driftwood. The exterior keeps that iconic cedar-shingled charm (because there’s no need to mess with a Hamptons classic), but inside, it’s a breezy, design-forward retreat where minimalism meets warmth.

The Rooms

Now featuring 30 updated guest rooms, The Sagaponack has three distinct options to suit any Hamptons vibe. The Main Inn rooms and suites lean upscale, with polished brass fixtures, bespoke furnishings, and artwork that nods to the area. The Studio Rooms are perfect for couples or solo travelers, complete with wet bars and private patios made for slow afternoons and a well-earned glass of rosé. For those traveling with family, pets, or a bigger group, the Bungalows deliver: spacious living areas, kitchenettes, and outdoor spaces that feel like your own South Fork retreat. No matter which room you pick, the beds are exceptionally comfortable, so a good night’s rest is also included in the stay.

The Food & Drink‍

There’s no restaurant on-site, but fear not: The hotel has two stocked “galleys”—one poolside and one in the Main Inn—serving complimentary snacks, Nespresso, and local treats around the clock. For now, picnics-to-go and curated bites are on offer, and when you're hitting the beach, they won't disappoint. Plus, the hotel is well-positioned to hit the area’s best dining spots within driving distance (Lucky’s, Topping Rose House, and The Golden Pear should be on your shortlist).

The Amenities

This isn’t the kind of place with a bustling lobby or a corporate gym. Instead, The Sagaponack leans into easy, elevated touches. A heated saltwater plunge pool with loungers sets the pace, while croquet, giant Jenga, and chess keep things entertaining. Weekly poolside movies (with popcorn and candy, of course) add a hint of summer camp nostalgia. Guests can get passes to local beaches and access to the hotel’s Beach Locker, which has all the essentials for a day on the sand, including lounge chairs, umbrellas, beach toys, and coolers. Plus, vintage and electric bikes are available on a first-come, first-served basis so anyone can explore the South Fork. It’s less resort, more like staying at your stylish friend’s summer house—with the bonus of turndown service.

Location & Neighborhood Recs‍

Right on Montauk Highway and spread across seven leafy acres, The Sagaponack lands you squarely between East Hampton and Bridgehampton (read: close enough to the scene, far enough from the traffic). A quick ride–or better yet, bike cruise–takes you to Gibson Beach, one of the quietest stretches of sand on the South Fork. Stop into Loaves & Fishes for their legendary sandwiches, hit Pike Farms for still-warm zucchini bread, and don’t miss the new and buzzworthy Sagaponack General Store, where the frozen yogurt alone is worth the detour. Wölffer Estate serves a perfect glass of wine under the vines, while Carissa’s Bakery is the go-to for buttery morning pastries.
