Housed in a 19th-century Victorian estate, Otahuna Lodge—a Relais & Châteaux property—has welcomed guests since 1895. With its stained glass windows, period woodwork, and original fireplaces, arriving feels more like visiting an old family friend than checking into a luxury lodge. That welcoming spirit extends throughout your stay: from the moment you arrive, owners Hall Cannon and Miles Refo make you feel like part of the family.

Originally built by Sir Heaton Rhodes as a wedding gift for his bride, Jessie, in 1895, the estate was lovingly restored by Hall and Miles in 2006. Today, a curated collection of contemporary New Zealand art adds a modern touch to the lodge’s richly detailed interiors. Archival photographs throughout the property serve as subtle reminders of Otahuna’s storied past. The lodge features five suites and two master suites, each individually designed with distinct décor and views overlooking the lush, expansive grounds.

Set on 12 hectares (over 30 acres), the property is home to formal gardens, a working farm, a swimming pool, pickleball courts, and more. The gardens, where more than 125 varieties of vegetables, fruits, and herbs are cultivated, are a cornerstone of the lodge’s culinary program. A guided tour of the estate’s private grounds is essential, offering insight into Otahuna’s rich heritage and exclusive access to gardens not open to the public. Another can’t-miss experience is a cooking class with Executive Chef Jimmy McIntyre, where guests can master new techniques while using freshly harvested ingredients.

Chef McIntyre crafts daily-changing menus based entirely on what’s in season and available from the lodge’s gardens. Every dish is thoughtfully prepared and widely regarded as some of the best cuisine in the country. Meals can be enjoyed privately—whether in-room, on the veranda, in the kitchen, wine cellar, or garden—or communally in the grand Victorian dining room with fellow guests. However you choose to dine, one thing is certain: the food will be unforgettable, just like the experience at Otahuna Lodge.
