Hotel Snapshot
The uncrowded, slightly hippie island of Hydra is mythical, but its single, idyllic sandy beach is definitely real—and that's where you'll find the Mandraki Beach Resort. It’s a luxe, design-oriented, adults-only retreat built on the foundations of a 19th-century naval fortification. This curious, military past lends a unique character to what is now a tranquil haven focused on complete ease, where guests are assured their own sunlounger for the duration of their stay. It’s open from April to November (we recommend September, as the weather is superb and crowds lessen compared to the month before).
Design + Character
One part weathered stone from its military past and one part crisp, contemporary minimalism. It’s a look that conveys plenty of character without feeling heavy or overbearing, perfectly mirroring Hydra's low-key vibe. The tranquil atmosphere is helped by the solidity of the construction and the sheer spaciousness of the interiors.
The Rooms
Calling them "rooms" is a disservice, as every unit is a suite. There’s a sturdy, grounded feel to the spaces, all of which feature free WiFi, Diptyque bath products, a minibar (with a complimentary first round), and Netflix on the TV. At the upper end of the range, the Beachfront Suites are steps from the sand, with some offering luxe extras like a secluded sunken pool on the terrace. For the best views, the Tower Suite—located in the old watchtower—offers expansive sea gazing and an alfresco sundowner spot. This is where we stayed—waking up to windows that glare out towards the calm waterscape feels magical.
Food + Drink
Dine at Captain M, the hotel's on-site restaurant, whose beachside setting shifts effortlessly from sunny beach-bar ease to casual glamour in the evenings. The menu is stacked with fresh catches and Mediterranean classics, such as citrusy grilled shrimp and lobster salad. However, it also caters to modern cravings with a full sushi menu and bao buns. Breakfast is an included, leisurely à la carte affair, featuring Greek favorites like feta-laden strapatsada. The sushi menu is tasty, too.
Signature cocktails, such as the Mandraki Spritz (gin, yuzu, grapefruit), are served to your lounger, with room service available around the clock.
The Amenities
You won't find a big spa or traditional pool, but trust us, you won't miss them. You have the only sandy beach on Hydra right outside your door, complete with a private jetty and floating dock—cocktails served right to the water. While there's no spa, a massage therapist can be called on for a bespoke kneading session. The resort makes getting around easy, too, with a complimentary boat shuttle running frequently to the car-free Hydra Port, which is just a seven-minute ride away.
Location & Neighborhood Recs
The resort is set in Mandraki Bay, a sheltered cove on the island's north coast. Hydra is famously car-free, relying on traditional modes of transport like mules and donkeys. You can take a ferry to the main port in Hydra from Athens. While the hotel setting is secluded, the free shuttle makes Hydra Port's stunning 19th-century mansions and cultural sites easily accessible. Just know that the island’s hilly terrain means this spot is unsuitable for guests with mobility issues.
My favorite spots include the 20-minute, cliff-curving trail from the hotel to Hydra’s charming town. Upon arrival, eat at Manna, a delicious Greek tavern on an enchanting side street. For those who want to hike (and this is no baby trek—it’s uphill for over three mile), I recommend the Hydra to Profitou Iliou Monastery walk. It takes you from the town to a saintly monastery high up on a mountain, where unmatched views inspire awe all around.
