Nestled in the foothills of the medieval town of Saint-Paul de Vence, which has drawn artists and writers for centuries, Toile Blanche has 22 suites (some with private pools) and one villa. She is an artists' playground with three main pools, two dining terraces, a pétanque court and a host of fine art punctuating the property. It's rated as five stars, starting at $280 a night in the low season, and is just a 20-minute drive from Nice.
Just a short drive away from the Côte d'Azur, we rustle up on the gravel of the mysterious "white linen" residence, also known as Toile Blanche. “White Lotus” this is not—the flavor here is more philosophical, as I realize when I encounter the endless artwork dotted about the house and gardens, and discover a provocative tome created by Toile Blanche's eccentric artist owners.
Alongside a miniature lavender field—ripe for Instagram shots—and garden terrace tables serving up kaleidoscopic local produce, are teh chicly matte-painted suites, each with robust sound systems and high-gloss paintings. The feeling is that this place should be pretentious. But the curated artwork and attentive service tell a different story. Conceptually, Toile Blanche toys with the idea of luxury and leisure and skewers it—all the while letting you enjoy the disarming beauty of France at its finest. It's a concept that has to be seen and felt to be understood.
Design & Character
I confess: art hotels can make me cringe. However, here they pull off the conceptual conversation throughout, and much of the hotel’s private art collection is genuinely interesting. The owners' dusty Porsche on the drive goes some way to explaining the Toile Blanche nuance: to admit to loving nice things, to appreciate craft and seize the fruits of privilege—whilst not being afraid to have meaningful conversations, get a little dirty, and share the riches of life … or something like that. As for what the hotel actually looks like, here you can expect plenty of old-world charm, with rattan-shaded patios covered in vines, sun-bleached stone facades and shuttered windows that open onto the garden with terracotta furnishings. Though its interiors are thoroughly modern, with concrete everything splashed with the right bit of color to add to the whimsy.
The Rooms
Toile Blanche’s 22 suites and singular villa offer an elevated-country-home feel. Some also include pools for extra privacy, and all have a deep, earthy, muted palette throughout. I adored the matte cocoa walls of my palatial suite’s bathroom, complete with a soaking tub and light cascading in from every picture window. My suite also included a spacious lounge and garden, replete with achingly cool furnishings and a well-stocked fridge.
The Food & Drink
Resisting the hotel’s richer dishes such as escargot or Gragnano lobster linguine, I enjoyed the hamachi tartare and grilled sea bream with garden vegetables and panisse with Provençal herbs: so clean and delightful, I still had room for a decadent apple millefeuille with salted butter caramel and Granny Smith apples in pomegranate vinegar. It was superb—as were the martini and the local white wine, as recommended by attentive and friendly waiter. The more casual tapas restaurant serves up garden delights for when you’re only looking for a snack or light lunch.
Amenities
There's no spa on-site, though the three gorgeous pools and deep bathtubs suffice, and a concierge is stationed elegantly above the gallery at all times of day. But where the hotel makes up for a lack of bigger box hotel amenities it makes up for in guest congeniality. Here, guests are encouraged to discuss art together, read books alongside one another, and pop into the village's coffee bars and other art museums.

This medieval walled village is no secret to lovers of the French Riviera. It's a town best enjoyed on foot, simply wandering the ramparts between the two iconic art museums, Fondation CAB and Fondation Maeght, before taking in the small galleries, fountains, and shops of Rue Grande with no particular aim.
