Housed in a landmark Greenwich Village building on West 8th Street, a matter of yards from the West Village boundary, The Marlton has an intimate, residential feel akin to a neighborhood hangout. Back in the day, Jack Kerouac and other creatives spent hours here conversing and trading ideas by the fire. Today, after a restoration by hotelier Sean MacPherson, it serves as a third space for digital nomads on muted Zoom calls and, later, the post-work-drinks crowd—along with, of course, overnight guests.

Design & Character

In many ways, The Marlton is a relic of a time when Greenwich Village was steeped in bohemian, Beatnik fringe, before sky-high rents and influencers moved in. The historic architecture, well-loved furnishings, and fireplaces harken back to that era, with a nod to Paris—a city that no doubt inspired the many authors and artists who used to hang around The Marlton in the 1900s.

The Rooms

Rooms are snug (as is so often the case in Greenwich Village) but full of character. Hardwood floors, ornate molding, ornamented mirrors, and starburst ceiling lights add plenty of charm to the compact bedrooms. Travelers who prefer a bit more space can swing for the suites, featuring separate living areas and private terraces.

The bathrooms look plucked from pristine pre-war apartments, complete with black-and-white marble tile, pedestal sinks, and old-school lighting. And, of course, the toiletries are from C.O. Bigelow, the legendary West Village apothecary around the corner.

Food & Drink

The influence of Paris isn’t just felt in the design—it carries through to the dining, too. Chez Nous, a swank all-day French brasserie in the reimagined Margaux space, serves up tuna tartare, rotisserie chicken, and a burger au poivre in a ground-floor setting layered with mirrored walls, coffered ceilings, red velvet banquettes, and The Ballad of the Dish and the Spoon, a mural by Cecily Brown.

Meanwhile, the lobby café hums from morning to night, with laptop-toting regulars packed around the fireplace and spilling out onto the seasonal outdoor seating once the weather warms.

Amenities

You don’t stay at The Marlton for the amenities. It has cozy places to eat, sleep, and work—and WiFi to help with the latter. Everything else you need or want is within a very short walk.

Spa & Wellness Scoop

While The Marlton doesn’t have a spa or fitness center, several workout studios are located on the same block, including Y7, CorePower, and SolidCore. For pampering, Kariné Kazarian offers facials, buccal massages, and body treatments, all using French cult-favorite Biologique Recherche.

Location & Neighborhood Recs

Located at 5 W 8th Street in Greenwich Village, The Marlton sits in one of the best dining pockets in the city—whether you’re craving southern Indian cuisine from Semma or steak from 4 Charles Prime Rib. For cocktails, Serpentine and People’s are chic spots, just a few blocks away.
