Design & Character
The first thing you notice when arriving at the property is the main house’s charming wrap-around porch that feels straight out of The Notebook. To check in, you walk through the library dining area and toward the back sun room, where you’ll ring an old-school doorbell for the innkeeper. The staff then lead you up the carpeted staircase to the second level, or outside to one of the cottages tucked behind the lush foliage. The surrounding gardens are as much a part of the experience as the historic buildings themselves, creating secluded pathways, hidden seating areas, and the perfect picnic spots scattered across a bright green lawn. There is no grand lobby or overt display of lavishness—instead, the hotel’s character lies in its familiar warmth and unhurried atmosphere.
The Rooms
Each of the 15 suites and cottages are completely unique, ensuring that even the most loyal of return guests can experience a brand-new setting at each visit. Some feature wood-burning fireplaces and private patios with picturesque garden views; others have vaulted ceilings and large soaking tubs. However, no matter where you choose to stay, expect curated designs that appeal to any vintage fanatic. Though a majority of the cottage rooms feature white wooden walls adorned in antique sconces and paintings, the suites in the main house tend to take a more maximalist approach. The Mary Simpson Room boasts a stunning landscape mural that’s enhanced by dark green trims, while the Sun Room’s floral wallpaper adds depth to the otherwise small space, which is balanced out by a massive outdoor deck.
The Food & Drink
While there is no designated restaurant on-site, Simpson House Inn’s claim to fame is its chef-driven estate breakfast. Every morning, guests are greeted by an array of fresh fruits, pastries, juices, and savory selections created by Michelin-recognized chef Julian Martinez. The property also serves a signature tea service, which can be enjoyed outside in the whimsical gardens or inside the storied parlor—just be sure to contact the hotel about a reservation in advance.
