Hotel Snapshot

Romantic, exclusively and utterly serene, San Ysidro Ranch is the grande dame of Montecito. Between the rugged sandstone backdrop of the Santa Ynez Mountains and the sweeping Pacific Ocean views in the distance, this celebrity-loved escape is about as picturesque as it gets. Despite being one of the priciest properties in California, San Ysidro Rancho offers an all-inclusive dining program that is well worth the splurge. Guests also enjoy access to a five-star spa, scenic pool deck complete with a full putt-putt course, and just 38 stand-alone cottages that make you feel right at home.

Design & Character

San Ysidro Ranch is nestled on 550 acres of lush, manicured gardens. From bright pink and purple bougainvillea to rows upon rows of fresh lavender, simply strolling around the grounds makes you feel as though you’ve been transported straight into a fairytale, complete with vine-covered gazebos and scenic lookout points. The entire property exudes a sense of rustic elegance, maintaining its historic roots with antique touches, vibrant rose bushes, and Old World charm.

Since everything is so spread out, guests can expect top-notch privacy throughout their stay. The Stonehouse Restaurant and accompanying speakeasy are located toward the front of the property, as is the spa, while the guest cottages extend all the way to the back toward the Tuscan-esque pool and putt-putt course. You’ll certainly be walking a lot, but the ethereal atmosphere and picturesque landscaping invite you to slow down and take in the surrounding beauty as you move from place to place.

The Rooms

All 38 cottages feel more like private residences than they do hotel rooms. From the Oak Grove cottage, which boasts a massive backyard with an outdoor shower and plush hammock, to the Kennedy cottage, where John and Jackie Kennedy spent their honeymoon in 1953, each accommodation boasts a bespoke yet cohesive interior. Patterned wallpapers and stone fireplaces are accented by vintage artwork and warm, vaulted ceilings, but outside, private hot tubs ensure that you can unwind with a hot soak under the stars each evening. The chic canopy beds are another design highlight, and if you visit with your furry family members, expect the royal treatment—a plush dog bed, premium treats, plenty of toys and even a filtered water dispenser.

The Food & Drink

As mentioned before, San Ysidro Ranch boasts an all-inclusive dining and drinking program, but don’t expect a lack of quality. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Stonehouse is an award-winning restaurant located within a 19th century citrus packing house. Though you can admire ocean views from the terrace, the Euro-esque interior is equally as enticing during the day, and you’ll feel as though you’re dining in a museum. At night, the terrace comes to life with candlelit tables and delicate twinkle lights overhead, creating the most romantic ambiance for a tableside steak Diane and the signature SYR macaroni and cheese. While you’re welcome to dine at Stonehouse for all of your meals, I highly recommend eating poolside for lunch while lounging under an orange umbrella with a margarita in hand. Can’t miss items include the Maine lobster dumplings, yellowtail crudo, and Ty Warner’s favorite Korean beef tacos.

Below the restaurant is a world-renowned wine cellar that holds a collection of more than 15,000 bottles, but for a closer look, book a private wine tasting during your stay. The downstairs Speakeasy, however, is the ultimate place for a nightcap accompanied by live music and a roaring fireplace. Old World stone walls create a contrast with bright red booths with leopard and tiger-print pillows, but during the holidays, the space becomes adorned in thousands of shimmer ornaments that hang from the ceiling.

The Amenities

San Ysidro Ranch offers the kind of “ask and you shall receive” service. Though the standard amenities, like all-inclusive dining and drinking, a heated swimming pool, high-speed Wifi, complimentary valet and dry cleaning service (just to name a few), cover all of the bases, I’m fully convinced that the property will bend over backwards to accommodate any request. There is also a full on-site spa, salon, mini golf course, and premium fitness facilities, along with the option for bike rentals and access to 17 miles of hiking trails.

Location & Neighborhood Recs

Located in the foothills of Montecito’s Santa Ynez Mountains, San Ysidro Ranch is situated right between rocky peaks and the Pacific Ocean. The views are unparalleled, giving guests the best of both worlds. Though it is not in the heart of Montecito, its private and secluded setting contributes to its exclusivity, allowing you to curate a true escape without the fuss.
