Hotel Snapshot

Visiting Napa for a team outing during my days in SF tech, I’ve always been curious to experience Sonoma—situated at the convergence of Russian River Valley, Dry Creek Valley, and Alexander Valley. The city is known for hot, approachable dining with a quiet ascent into an A-list destination in recent years—for those who want to experience the understated, honest side of luxury.

We were honored to be the first guests to experience the grand opening of Duchamp, founded by longtime Healdsburg residents, Mark and Marie Luzaich. This is an intimate 20-suite property that is locally owned and designed with an unmistakably residential atmosphere.

Stepping into the lobby, which blends into an indoor-outdoor lounge for the pool, I was greeted by a friendly hostess who graciously accommodated my early arrival. She recommended that I stop by Little Saint for bubbly and bites while room preparations were expedited, with a lovely bottle of wine upon arrival.

Design & Character

The boutique hotel feels like a familial residence—your stylish aunt’s summer home where anything you can imagine is well within reach. It was understated with little-to-no branding, and a clear lean towards artisanal quality over design trends when it comes to Luzaich’s thoughtful collaboration with Forma Design Partners and Shalls Design Studio.

There are four, low-profile buildings wrapping a central courtyard and pool, with an abundance of native greenery for a clear connection with nature. This space offers a balance of intimacy and community, where you can say hello to other stylish guests, or simply keep to you-and-yours.

The design language is intuitively organic—clean lines, natural materials, unbothered neutrals, and a seamless indoor-outdoor flow. Overall, contemporary enough to feel current, and residential enough to feel like a friend’s home—with lush greenery from every vantage point.

With a standard color palette of greyscale, natural wood and greenery, it feels as if you’re relaxing within a blank canvas to reflect on life and work. I’ve always had a supreme appreciation for designers who can cultivate a space that primes guests for a happy, productive mindset, without resorting to bells-and-whistles.

The Rooms

There’s quiet luxury, and then there’s silent luxury, which can be such a healing experience. With just twenty rooms that each look-and-feel like home, guests are invited to rejuvenate among sophisticated interiors that aren’t too fussed—the quality speaks for itself.

The townhome design and private patio reminded of a modernist’s take on Louisiana-style living. The large front porch, the wrought iron second-story patios, and the “stay a while” sort of feeling.

To the right, a lovely seating area for unpacking my suitcase and tossing my clothes about. To the left, a minimal kitchen with a retro SMEG refrigerator, which somehow singularly elevated the entire space. The furniture collection featured statuesque marble column tables, and paired leather with wood as the best of friends.

The bed was expansive, beautifully supporting my Hollywood-inspired ritual of jumping and falling into the pillows upon each hotel arrival. In particular, I noticed the intentional placement of windows and filtered drapes, which maintained privacy, while offering a soft glow as if I were starring in a top-dollar Baz Luhrmann film. The bathroom features an oversized vanity and walk-in shower, with my absolute-favorite beauty brand, Salt & Stone based nearby in LA.

Overall, guests enjoy the feeling of a modern cocoon as the backdrop for an intentional trip, whether solo or with good friends and loved ones.

The Food & Drink

From private tastings to full-on feasts, we were pampered with the season’s finest pours and bites.

Duchamp very intentionally doesn’t run a full F&B program, rather leaning into the Healdsburg restaurant and bar scene just steps away as their extended dining room.

We began with a hoot-and-holler at Journeyman Meat Co., where the city’s darling, Cathy Seghesio, shared her family’s love for the city and craft, offering smart pairings from partnering wineries. It was the perfect introduction to the city’s zeitgeist, which is remarkably interwoven and familial.

Following, we stopped by BloodRoot Wines for a casual, neighborhood pour of their OTOTO “one time one time only” which is their evergreen label of ultra-rare, experimental blends. This time, a balance of seven varietals including: pinot noir, kerner, and grenache. Thankfully, I bought one to reminisce at home.

While the group lavished in a proper feast at Valette Healdsburg, I confess that I succumbed to jet lag and woke up in a fog circa 8:00pm. Changing into my swimmies, I enjoyed a dip in the hot tub, whilst looking up at the stars and FaceTiming friends.

Our breakfast at Costeaux French Bakery was quite charming—locally beloved, hearty meals with a dash of French refinement. Inspired by the new Monte Cristo series out on Amazon Prime Video, a favorite childhood read, I delighted in the Monte Cristo with Costeaux cinnamon walnut bread, black forest ham, turkey, Jarlsberg cheese, and cranberry relish.

The concept of Duchamp as the homebase and Healdsburg as the kitchen led to much more exploration and variety than the standard hotel experience.

The Amenities

The modernity and symmetries about the space makes for an OCD traveler’s paradise. As a brand-new space, the interiors and landscaping is as pristine as it gets. During the walk through with Tom Nelson, VP of Operations, you could see that he and his staff were beaming with pride—while cultivating a silent luxury experience that only has to whisper to be heard.

Standing in the lobby-poolhouse, looking over the U-shaped property that gives you a warm hug, with a stately pool and hot tub fit for the European countryside—it’s an environment that signals to your body it’s okay to turn off those racing thoughts and be present with you-and-yours in nature.

HAP Insiders—Duchamp offers an insider winery concierge program, with a dedicated team connected to Sonoma’s most iconic wineries. Here, members enjoy bottles that reach beyond the shelf of standard hotel referrals.

Walking to the plaza is a luxury in itself. The heart of Healdsburg, bustling with locals and passers-through, and proudly featuring larger-than-life redwood trees. There is no telling the stories of happenings below those centuries-old trees, wide enough it would take a few people to wrap their arms around. This is a great space for people watching and recharging with an iced coffee from Black Oak Coffee Roasters.

Location & Neighborhood Recs

During our stay in Healdsburg, we enjoyed quite the variety of tours. Appellation Healdsburg is one of the year’s most talked about openings in Sonoma as the flagship of a new culinary-forward hotel brand, co-founded by Michelin-starred chef, Charlie Palmer, and 30-year Four Seasons veteran, Christopher Hunsberger.

Shopping about the quintessential town was such a delight. Two boutiques that stood out to me—Antique Harvest with one of the finest and most robust collectives I have ever seen, and Fideaux luxury pet boutique who greeted dogs by name as they dragged their owners in the shop for a treat—clearly a daily ritual.

Grounding our pinkies-up tastings with live music at a charming local bar, Little Saint, we enjoyed traveling performers sharing their story and craft in a no-frills environment with audience engagement akin to a comedy show.

We were chartered in the futuristic ESCALADE IQ to the dazzling Montage winery, and a Bachelor-level sprinter van to Jordan winery. It was fascinating to see the variety of design styles, and taste the breadth of local flavors, among award-winning hoteliers, restauranteurs, sommeliers, and niche industry luminaries.
