Hotel Snapshot

A winding back road cuts through Dundee, Oregon, before a sharp turn sends guests up a zig-zagging hill toward the beautiful Black Walnut Inn & Vineyard. Vineyards spill across the slopes, and the property sits right at the top, overlooking the Dundee Hills in the heart of the Willamette Valley. It feels removed in the best way, since it’s quiet, open, and slightly elevated above the countless tasting rooms below. On clear days, the views stretch far beyond the vines, reaching Mount Hood and Mount Jefferson.

Black Walnut is small, with just nine rooms, but the scale works in its favor. Spread across a working vineyard and set on a large plot of land, the property has enough room to explore, or alternatively, stay put. Here, it’s easy to slow down and enjoy all that this famed wine region has to offer.

Design & Character

The inn has the relaxed look and feel of a Tuscan villa, with warm plaster walls, natural stone, and wood accents that make everything polished but warm. Interiors are designed to highlight the landscape, complete with terraces that look towards the vineyards and sun-filled sitting areas that are perfect for a cup of coffee or a glass of wine at any hour of the day.

The lobby is the main gathering spot, and essentially the anchor of the inn. Someone’s usually there, reading, chatting, or just soaking in the view from the big windows that frame the vineyards. A fireplace sits in the center of the room, while comfy couches and chairs make it easy to settle in for a while. A part-chess-part-backgammon table can be found in the corner, giving guests an easy way to kill time before a wine tasting. Outside, a spacious patio with fire pits extends the space right into the fresh air.

The Rooms

With just nine rooms, Black Walnut Inn has the kind of scale that makes every guest feel at home while still enjoying privacy. The rooms are split between the main house, where the lobby and common spaces are, and the Carriage House, which is a few steps away for guests who want undisturbed views of the landscape. Both areas are lovely, just with slightly different vibes — the main house is cozy and social, while the Carriage House is quieter and edges up to the vineyard.

The Food & Drink

Black Walnut has amazing food, thanks to Executive Chef Chase Williams and Sous Chef Zack Ehrlich. For breakfast, guests can order from a stacked menu, featuring farm-fresh eggs, sweet treats (the pumpkin pancakes are a must), tasty sides, and seasonal fruit. Freshly squeezed juice, hot tea, and strong coffee round things out. Each dish is generous without being heavy, and it sets the tone for the day, whether exploring the area or sipping on wine.

For an extremely impressive culinary experience, Anthology at The Four Graces (which is on property) is where Black Walnut really distinguishes itself. The 14-seat chef’s counter has a seasonal tasting menu led by Chef Williams and Chef Ehrlich, with dishes prepared in an open kitchen directly in front of guests. The experience is both intimate yet conversational, rather than overly formal, with chefs explaining techniques and ingredients as courses are served. A wine pairing is also offered, featuring the sommelier’s best picks, making this a very hands-on way to experience the region’s food and wine.

Speaking of wine pairings, they highlight both estate wines and the broader Willamette Valley, with an emphasis on Pinot Noir. Guests can do tastings at The Four Graces, which is a great way to spend an afternoon.

The Amenities

A big part of what makes Black Walnut feel special is the property itself. The grounds stretch across vineyards, with dirt paths that are nice to stroll between meals or tastings. There’s even a working barn with chickens, goats, and two pigs (Willa and Hazel) that guests can feed and pet.

Wine is everywhere here, in a good way. Guests can head over to The Four Graces for tastings, try a self-guided flight of estate and neighboring wines, or join the weekly culinary foraging walks with the inn’s team. It’s a nice way to see how the land curates what ends up on the menu and gives a peek behind the scenes at the property.

There are seasonal events too, like truffle hunting, followed by a truffle-focused meal paired with local wines. There’s a small fitness center if needed, but most days it’s easy to get activity in outside.

Location & Neighborhood Recs

Black Walnut sits right in the heart of the Willamette Valley, one of the world’s top spots for Pinot Noir. A quick drive down the hill takes you into Dundee, where tasting rooms, small boutiques, and cute cafés line the streets, making it easy to spend an afternoon. Beyond the town itself, the Dundee Hills have hiking trails, pretty overlooks, and little spots to stop for a picnic. For food lovers, there are plenty of restaurants serving everything from seasonal farm-to-table dishes and classic comfort meals, perfect for enjoying after tastings.
