The Almanac Palais Vienna is a 5-star boutique hotel that offers a quintessential glimpse of everything the city has to offer. Housed in what were originally two 19th-century palaces—Palais Henckel von Donnersmarck and the Palais Leitenberger—the property has been restored into a sophisticated accommodation that represents both the city’s history in its grand architectural design as well as its progression into the modern world thanks to its gallery-like displays of contemporary art.
As a first-timer in Vienna, it was important to me that my hotel be in the heart of it all—walking distance from museums, cafes, and local neighborhoods—and the Almanac Palais Vienna checked all the boxes. Upon check-in, I received a complete dose of what was in store for my stay as I was immediately surrounded by both modern art and centuries-old architecture. With a cosmopolitan feel that's never stuffy, the hotel perfectly marries the classic and contemporary vibes of the city itself, from its restored palace walls to its rooms complete with a tech pad of lighting and curtain controls.
Mornings started with either a sit-down breakfast from the hotel’s restaurant or a quick coffee and pastry from its adjoining coffee shop ahead of full days of sightseeing, while evenings ended with a relaxing, full nighttime routine in the spacious mirror-filled bathroom.
Design and Character
While art lovers visiting Vienna can find a variety of works spanning centuries, from classical to modern pieces across the city’s multiple museums and galleries, those staying at Almanac Palais Vienna may find the best of both worlds all in one place. At the entrance, guests are immediately immersed in its history thanks to its grand archway, but are then greeted with a clean aesthetic complete with displays of modern artwork curated from the nearby Albertina Gallery. During my stay, two works by contemporary sculptor Erwin Wurm were exhibited in the lobby.
The Rooms
Sanctuary-like, the dark wooden decor with gold accents and lighting is a bit of a departure from the hotel’s bright, sunlit lobby, but its contemporary design and modern features make for a luxurious and comforting stay. Not to mention, the blackout curtains at the touch of a button may come as a major relief for any jet-lagged traveler. A stocked minibar, in-room bathrobes, and a luxurious bathroom also allow guests to settle in and take in the city at their own pace—whether they’re in for an early morning or late night.
Among its 111 rooms and suites, the Vienna Art Suite pays particular homage to the city's art scene. Specifically, the suite features works by Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, and Oskar Kokoschka thanks to the hotel’s collaboration with the Belvedere Museum.
The Food and Drink
To start the day, Elias, the coffee shop attached to the hotel, which is frequented by guests and locals alike, has a menu complete with espresso drinks and matcha as well as pastries and sandwiches.
To get to Elias, though, guests will walk through the airy and bright Donnersmark Restaurant, where both Viennese classics like wiener schnitzel and apple strudel and plant-forward fare like chanterelles and quiche are on the menu. A daily breakfast of either à la carte options or a buffet is also served in the restaurant, which has both outdoor and indoor seating.
Just off the lobby is the Donnersmark Bar, which can't be missed thanks to its red, black, and gold mod decor that presents a low-lit and moody vibe compared to the rest of the property. There, guests can enjoy signature cocktails, Austrian wines, and a variety of spritzes.
The Amenities
As part of its spa facility, which is complete with a fitness center, swimming pool, sauna, and steam room, guests can also receive a host of spa treatments like traditional massages and facials. A standout treatment, for those prioritizing sleep, is the Gold Sleep Ritual. This in-room experience encourages a peaceful night’s rest with features like personalized pillows and a dedicated nighttime and morning routine for participants to follow.
The hotel also offers complimentary yoga classes and has a concierge desk to help with reservations around the city.
The Almanac Palais Vienna’s restored heritage rooms, just a floor above the lobby, show off the property’s original design, which would make any guest feel like they are stepping back in time into a scene of a royal affair. Today, these rooms, which were originally used by the noble Leitenberger family, are used for events and meetings.
Location and Neighborhood Recs
The property is situated on the city's Ringstrasse Boulevard, bustling but perfect for a stroll, which is lined with restaurants, shops, and cafes. It’s also right across the street from Stadtpark, a public park filled with monuments, walking and running paths, and plenty of trees and green space, that's also home to 3-star Michelin restaurant Steirereck.
The Almanac Palais Vienna is also within walking distance of the Albertina Museum, as well as must-see sights like the St. Charles Church and the Hofburg Palace. It’s also a short drive to the Belvedere Museum and the historic Schönbrunn Palace.
