Hotel Snapshot
The Lodge at Jaguar Reef delivers a tranquil, Caribbean experience without the crowds. The boutique property in the fishing village of Hopkins, Belize, is set along a pristine beach with no mega hotel in sight. Jaguar Reef boasts thoughtful design and exceptional service, with a relaxed ambiance that invites you to truly unwind. Drift from kayaking the turquoise coast to sipping a cocktail on a hammock over the water and even luxuriating on a private island. The Lodge at Jaguar Reef is part of the Belize Collection, an independent, Belizean-owned hotel group with properties throughout the country.
Design & Character
The coastal chic property features suites and villas connected to pools, restaurants, and two sister properties by winding paths through the raked sand. The interior design throughout reflects its natural surroundings with elegant neutrals accentuated by organic textures and pops of Caribbean color. Locally crafted elements are incorporated, including original paintings by Belizean artists, driftwood pieces inspired by the coastline, and handcrafted décor made from banana fibers by Belize Banana Fibers. The Belize Collection’s Artist in Residence program provides opportunities for artists to exhibit their work and create site-specific pieces featured on its properties.
The Rooms
Elevated neutrals offer a calm retreat across the 24 suites and villas, with many featuring sea views from full-length glass windows and outdoor sitting areas. Villas include a sleek kitchen complete with appliances. While each accommodation is just steps from the beach and pools, several also feature private plunge pools. Handmade bar soaps are locally sourced from Little Farmhouse Soap, a plant-based, eco-friendly, plastic-free Belizean brand. Unique pieces by local artists lend a deep sense of connection to Belize. The atmosphere is serene, curated, and inviting.
The Food & Drink Situation
Enjoy an oceanfront meal at the Paddle House. Locally inspired dishes shine at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Opt for a traditional Belizean breakfast with fresh juice, a lunch of Yucatán-style pork Pibil and freshly made corn tortillas, and a dinner of seafood dishes influenced by the local Garifuna culture. Relax under wicker lanterns in the lobby bar as you sip a Roseate Spoonbill made with tequila blanco, watermelon cubes, lime juice, and house-made syrup of jalapeño, roasted pineapple, and anise. Watch revelers jump from a rope swing at the two-story Big Dock Ceviche Bar while sampling fresh shrimp or conch ceviche. Wood-fired pizzas charred in a fogón at Don Tonito's Pizzeria and tropical cocktails at Charlie's Pool Bar round out the offerings.
Amenities
Don’t just admire the stunning Caribbean Sea, explore it with complimentary paddle boards and kayaks. Hop on a bicycle to explore the village of Hopkins, then relax by booking an in-room massage or treatment at the adjacent spa. A range of additional paid experiences are available, including Garifuna cooking and drumming classes, a bioluminescence tour, and snorkeling Belize’s famed reefs.
For the ultimate in relaxation, book a day trip to Rhythm Reef Caye, the resort’s private island. A 40-minute boat ride whisks you away to a secluded 14-acre island once owned by Ringo Star. Choose your own adventure in this island paradise. During my visit to Rhythm Reef, I savored a three-course meal prepared under the palm trees, snorkeled its namesake reef guided by a marine biologist, and watched fish jump in the crystalline waves. Sinking into the island’s rhythm was the highlight of my time in Belize.
Location & Neighborhood Recs
Hopkins is the cultural center of the Garifuna community in Belize. Take a traditional drumming lesson at Lebeha Drumming Center or listen to Garifuna drummers nightly at Driftwood Beach Bar & Pizza Shack. Try authentic Garifuna dishes like hudut or gibnut at local restaurants, including Semeti Giffiti and Innie’s.
A short trip inland leads you to jungle hikes filled with waterfalls and wildlife. The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, the world’s first jaguar sanctuary, protects about 150 square miles of tropical rainforest just a 40-minute drive from the resort. Explore Maya ruins, swimming holes, and more trails at Mayflower Bocawina National Park, a 30-minute drive from Hopkins.
