There's a specific kind of quiet that only exists when you're somewhere truly, genuinely alone. No strangers at the next lounge chair, no lobby buzz, no ambient hum of other people's vacations. At Cayo Espanto, a four-acre private island resort three miles off the coast of San Pedro, Belize, that quiet is the whole point. Newly refreshed and more beautiful than ever, this is the rare place that earns every superlative thrown at it.
Design & Character
Cayo Espanto has always understood that when you're surrounded by the Caribbean Sea, your job as a designer is to get out of the way. The seven villas, including the coveted overwater Casa Ventanas, have been reimagined with a tropical-meets-Moroccan aesthetic: Tadelakt finishes (a water-resistant Moroccan plaster technique) on shower walls, sinks, and vanities; elegant new light fixtures; and an indoor-outdoor living concept that keeps the deep blue of the water in your peripheral vision at nearly all times. The palette throughout is blues, whites, and wicker, island chic that reflects its natural surroundings rather than competing with them. It's luxurious without being stuffy, which, frankly, is exactly the right call out here.
The Rooms
No matter which villa you find yourself in, you’ll find that the views of the crystal-clear Caribbean are, without exaggeration, unmatched. The cleverly arranged layout of the villas means that even when the island is at full capacity, a maximum of 18 guests across all seven, you'll never feel it. Total privacy is not just promised here; it's architecturally guaranteed. Each villa comes with a private dock and a private pool, both of which will become the center of your universe within approximately one hour of arrival. While fully open to the incredible outdoors, villas are kept meticulously clean thanks to an incredible housekeeping staff, and towels and linens are fresh, comfortable, and oh-so-inviting.
Food & Drink
Before you even set foot on the island, Cayo Espanto sends a pre-arrival questionnaire asking about your culinary preferences, dietary needs, and favorite snacks. The incredibly talented executive chef then takes it from there, tailoring every meal, every day, to your specific tastes. The result is a dining experience that feels improbably personal: all fresh seafood, prepared creatively and lovingly, presented with genuine care. There's no restaurant to walk to, no menu to consult, just your houseman appearing with exactly what you want, exactly where you want it. Breakfast on the dock. Dinner watching the sunset. A smoothie that arrives, unbidden, at precisely the moment you most need it.
Amenities
A 24-hour personal houseman assigned exclusively to your villa is the amenity that makes all other amenities moot. Truly, this is a team that anticipates your every need before you articulate it to yourself. Beyond the houseman, the island offers kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, Hobie Cats, snorkeling equipment, and a newly expanded gym and spa casita for those who want them. Organized excursions — snorkeling at nearby Hol Chan Marine Reserve, diving the Blue Hole, visits to Maya ruins — can be arranged through the concierge.
Location & Neighborhood Recs
The island sits in the calm waters of the Western Caribbean, three miles off San Pedro on Ambergris Caye. For those looking to explore beyond Cayo Espanto's shores, San Pedro is a short water taxi ride away with restaurants, galleries, and shops. But honestly? You won't want to leave. The sunsets alone — rose gold, orange, and deep red light burning against the blue of the ocean, best witnessed from the end of your private dock with a drink in hand and a houseman ready to capture the moment — will keep you right where you are.
