Hotel Snapshot
Set along the Delaware River, about an hour from Philadelphia and two hours from New York, New Hope is a destination for the cognoscenti—the kind of people who exude taste and class. They’re drawn to all things luxury, but in a very anti-big-brand way. And when they descend here, the River House at Odette’s is where they stay.
Situated at the far end of the town’s main thoroughfare, the 36-room property occupies the very spot where the famed musician and actress Odette Myrtil once had her lively cabaret. The vibe is equal parts chic and country calm, a quality that attracts guests here, not just once but over and over. Just ask me, I’ve been twice and can’t wait to return.
Design & Character
Industrial elements, romanticism, and city cool all play into River House’s distinctive DNA. Elements include velvet textiles, leather couches, a vaulted-ceiling lobby, vintage lighting, and oversized windows. I was drawn to the wall coverings layered with musical scores, love letters from Chez Odette’s, and local artworks, a nod to the area’s heritage as a mainstay for creatives.
The Rooms
River House’s 36 rooms are design-forward and not shy when it comes to colors. Dramatic murals frame the headboards, and the textiles in jewel tones imbue a richness to each space. Many accommodations open via French doors to private balconies overlooking the Delaware River. The bathrooms are large and spa-like, with rainforest showers. Splurge for a suite if you’re celebrating a special occasion or just because. Suites are equipped with either kitchenettes or full kitchens, plus fireplaces you’ll want to snuggle in front of come cold weather.
Food & Drink
You know a hotel restaurant is worth trying if it’s a hit with locals. Given how packed and vibrant Odette’s, the signature restaurant, is every day and night, it’s a safe bet to assume that it’s a must for guests, too. Expect an elevated take on classics like Heirloom Tomato Burrata Toast and Crab Cake Benedict during brunch. Or a Filet Mignon French dip, Kung Pao-style Chicken Wings, a pristine raw seafood selection, and Calabrian-style Jumbo Scallops come lunch and dinner.
Over at the Piano Lounge and ROOF, the cocktails, both with alcohol and zero-proof, are free-flowing, as are the wines and spirits. You can come pre-dinner, but if you want a scene, late evening is a much better bet.
Amenities
The hotel is light on amenities, but that’s a good thing in this case. The point of coming is to get out and explore, not stay indoors. You can peruse the in-house book collection, curated by the beloved New Hope Farley’s Bookshop, or borrow bikes to ride on the path along the Delaware River, which is bang outside the property. River House also hosts seasonal events like Fireside Ghost Stories in October and a Disco Ball Party on New Year’s Eve.
Location & Neighborhood Recs
Downtown New Hope is a five-minute stroll away and brims with art galleries, homegrown stores, cafes to grab coffee and people watch, and restaurants that punch well above their weight. Just ask the many boldfacers who live in or around town– Bradley Cooper, Zayn Malik, Gigi Hadid, and Bella Hadid are among the most recognizable names.
Within a 20-minute drive, my favorite stops are Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve, a serene stretch of woodlands, ponds, and meandering paths, and Manoff Market Cidery, where a steaming cup of freshly pressed cider hits the spot on a chilly day. If you’re into hiking, like me, I suggest Delaware & Raritan Canal State Park and Tyler State Park. Both deliver miles of trails for every fitness level and pace.
