The British Virgin Islands’ most anticipated opening in 2024, Peter Island Resort, continues to make literal waves by attracting boat owners, vacation-goers, and A-listers to its sandy shores after a six-year hiatus and mass renovation.

After suffering substantial hurricane damage, the 42-key oasis shut down completely, only to reemerge as one of the Caribbean’s most beloved and talked-about properties due to its ultra-remote locale, five-star accommodation, and ability to go incognito.

Beyond its jagged cliffs, five lapis-hued beaches, and breathtaking sunsets from practically every vantage point, it provides a one-of-a-kind opportunity for travelers to completely detach from the stresses of everyday life and live as a bit of a castaway.

Of course, rooms and suites are thoughtfully designed and curated to be oceanside sanctuaries, featuring oversized, cave-like bathrooms, relaxing cream-colored decor with herringbone floors and wood-beam ceilings, as well as personal hot tubs.

Larger groups can enjoy multi-bedroom villas (and literal mansions) built into the mountains that are completely removed from the shared spaces. But there are so many other spots on the BVI’s largest private island for all guests to unwind in complete solitude. Hiking trails, scenic overlooks, and swimming coves are only a few examples, but we can’t give away all of the resort’s secrets. After all, the BVI is often referred to as “Nature’s Little Secrets,” and some are worth uncovering on your own.

Top Takeaways

Location: Peter Island, British Virgin Islands

Address: 9C5F+9Q5, Sprat Bay, British Virgin Islands

Rating: Five-Star

The Vibe: Cool, calm, and collected. While Peter Island Resort certainly caters to a high-brow clientele, its relaxed environment allows its naturally beautiful surroundings to do most of the talking. Visitors tend to keep to themselves to enjoy the sun and sand during the day while letting their hair down at meals and sunset happy hours. It’s the epitome of “laidback luxury.”

Food + Drink: There are two on-site restaurants: The Drake Steakhouse and Drunken Pelican. The former is a more elegant option with premium cuts of beef and indulgent American side dishes, while Drunken Pelican serves up elevated takes on Caribbean classics such as tiger prawns, conch fritters, curry chicken roti, and baked jerk cornish hen.

Amenities: Spa; fitness center; business center; on-site restaurants and bar; free breakfast; watersports; bike rentals; pickleball courts; hiking trails; pool

Our Favorite Thing About the Hotel: While it’s fun to see and be seen in common areas with guests from all over the world, the resort shines most in its more remote locales. The Spa is exceptional, boasting 10,000 square feet of intimate treatment rooms and a tranquility garden,  as well as a gym, pool, cliffside jacuzzi, and private beach. A massage, facial, or nail service is an absolute must to complement any stay.

5 Nearby Attractions: Marina and Yacht Club; The Baths of Virgin Gorda; Shark Bay National Park; Tortola; Jost Van Dyke

Any Personal Neighborhood Recs? Peter Island Resort sits on its own private island with the intentional feel of being completely removed from civilization. It is unlikely that guests will venture off-property unless they want to take a boat trip to snorkel, fish, dive, and/or explore the nearby archipelago. That said, the hotel offers a bevy of personalized experiences and excursions, such as a sunset loop tour, candlelit dinner, and beach picnic, that are worth the added expense.

Pricing: Rooms start at $1,000/night
