Hotel Snapshot
This boutique guesthouse, built in the 1800s, sits on a cobbled street in the historic old town of Gjirokastër in Albania. Once the home of a renowned local family, the current owners bought it 10 years ago and renovated it into the hotel you see today. With only four bedrooms, it offers an intimate, personal experience. N'Sokak means "alleyway" in Albanian, and this street connects the old town to the new one down the hill. The benefit of being at this elevation is that you get to wake up to mountain views, plus it's not too far to walk to the castle and main sites of the old town. Gjirokastër itself is UNESCO-listed, and heritage hotels like this are a key part of the town's appeal.
Design & Character
Like many houses in Gjirokastër, this one is built in the traditional style. The owners did a stellar job of preserving the original architecture and respecting its period features – think dark-wood interiors, exposed stone walls and facade, timber beams, local arts and crafts. Downstairs, a cozy reception area includes a bar and open fire – ideal for spending an evening with a çaj mali (mountain tea) or a glass of Albanian wine. There are copies of National Geographic, books by Ismail Kadare – whose house is a few doors down – sculptures by the late Gjirokastrian artist Arben Bajo, as well as paintings by his daughter, Era.
The Rooms
All four rooms face the mountains – the two on the top floor also have their own balconies. Beds are very comfy, with high-quality linens, and the decor of stone and wood is tasteful and atmospheric. The modern heating system was much appreciated in winter and doubles as air conditioning in summer. Book the Palace of Dreams room for its deep, egg-shaped bathtub. There's no in-room kettle or coffee machine, but you do get a small fridge with a minibar and a bottle of local wine. On the bedside table is a carafe of filtered water infused with rosemary and lemon. Refillable White Company toiletries add sustainability points.
Food & Drink
The Albanian owners try to support local farmers, producers, and chefs where possible. Although there's no restaurant per se, staff can book private chef Nasho to come and prepare dinner for you in the hotel. There's no set menu to speak of. I dined by the fire and was treated to grilled fish with fresh vegetables and salad, local cheeses, and wine – all delicious. In the morning, the bar area is set up with a breakfast spread of seasonal fruits, cereals, byrek, qifqi (Albanian donuts), honey, and homemade jam.
Amenities
Guests can book a guided tour of Gjirokastër, horseback riding in the nearby villages, workshops with local artisans, or cooking classes to learn how to make byrek and qifqi.
