How to Nail Destination Wedding Style, According to Silvia Tcherassi

Jet-setting to a destination wedding takes more than just a well-packed suitcase—it calls for style that’s sophisticated, comfortable, and effortlessly memorable. That’s why I turned to Silvia Tcherassi, the Colombian-born designer known for fusing Latin flair, architectural elegance, and couture craftsmanship.

For my first wedding of the season, I traveled to the verdant hills of Carmel Valley. As is typical of California’s Central Coast, the morning began cloaked in fog—prompting the usual questions: Do I need a jacket? How should I do my hair? But when it came to the dress, I felt completely confident.

I wore Silvia Tcherassi’s Sherry Dress in Spring Blooms—a pattern as radiant as a hand-painted flower patch. The halter neckline tied in a delicate bow that trailed along the open back, and the silk shimmered in hues of grass green, peony pink, and Tuscan yellow. Paired with gold accessories, it felt effortlessly polished.

Whether beachside or black tie, city chic or mountain romance, Silvia Tcherassi’s thoughtful guidance is your passport to dressing flawlessly for any destination wedding. Below, she shares her expert style tips for every setting.

For a Coastal Wedding

Whether it's the maximalist pink décor of Palm House in Palm Beach or the sun-drenched vineyards of Holman Ranch in Carmel Valley—just inland from Carmel-by-the-Sea—coastal weddings call for looks that feel effortless yet elevated. “I would opt for a dress with texture and movement—blush and green tones tend to work beautifully in those settings,” tells Tcherassi.

For a City Ceremony

There’s something about the pure sophistication of a city wedding that’s unmatched. Think cosmopolitan hotels with edge, like The Bowery, skyline views from the Wythe Hotel in Williamsburg, or a ceremony beneath the grand arches of the New York Public Library. To match the metropolitan feel, Tcherassi shares: “Clean lines and minimalism would be my recommendation. You can add depth with textured fabrics or statement accessories. I would avoid voluminous skirts or oversized prints in vibrant tones—a city wedding calls for a distinct, more refined dress code.”

For a Mountain Marriage

From the piercing blue waters of Lake Tahoe—best viewed from the lakefront Edgewood Tahoe—to the rugged Rockies in Telluride, where the alpine-chic Dunton Town House makes a dreamy home base, mountain weddings are breathtaking (with a side of unpredictable weather).

“Definitely lace, but with a silhouette that feels modern—the texture and romance of lace are perfect for these kinds of settings,” Tcherassi advises. “I’ve always loved layering different types of lace or experimenting with appliqué; it creates textures and patterns that feel truly special. A long-sleeve dress in a heavier knit would be a great choice. A stole or faux fur jacket in a matching shade—similar to how Jennifer Lopez recently styled one of our designs at a Vanity Fair party—would be the perfect complement.”

For a Beach Destination

Chances are, someone in your circle is hosting a wedding in Mexico—think the design-forward Viceroy Los Cabos in San José del Cabo. “Our signature Jazmin dress is ideal,” says Tcherassi. “The architectural draping, knotted detailing, and plunging halter neckline feel made for Mexico. This season, we’ve reimagined it in a beautifully textured turquoise hue that’s perfect for the setting.”

For a European Wedding

Europe is chock-full of stunning spots to say “I do,” and Italy often steals the show. From the iconic Borgo Egnazia in Puglia to the under-the-radar Santavenere in Maratea, you really can’t go wrong. “A floor-grazing tunic would be a great option—perhaps in jacquard or a sheer, lightweight fabric,” Sylvia reports. “There’s something undeniably majestic about a well-made tunic–icons like Jackie O and Marella Agnelli always come to mind.”
