Hotel Snapshot

Between its Neoclassical architecture, prime location and scenic rooftop terrace, Casa Gangotena offers an unparalleled experience in Ecuador’s capital of Quito. As the former manor of the affluent Gangotena family, this Relais & Châteaux property acts as a time capsule, transporting guests to the golden age with its antique accents, stunning frescoes and Art Deco-inspired rooms. The award-winning on-site restaurant puts an elegant twist on classic Ecuadorian fare, while the exclusive rooftop bar provides a bird’s-eye view of the surrounding Plaza de San Francisco.

Whether you’re passing through Quito on your way to the Galápagos Islands or spending a week exploring this South American capital, Casa Gangotena offers a historic stay in the heart of Quito.

Design & Character

As soon as you enter the massive, guarded doors of Casa Gangotena, towering ceilings with intricate crown moldings and glistening chandeliers catch the eye. Marble floors and columns reflect the warm glow of vintage sconces, leading the way toward a grand spiral staircase that looks straight out of the Gilded Age.

On the first floor, just outside the restaurant’s entrance, a quaint sun room filled with lush greenery and fresh florals acts as a sort of third space, where guests can dine, mingle, or seek company from a good book and a glass of wine. There are also several cozy, corner nooks with vintage furnishings, gold-framed mirrors, and dramatic curtains, paying homage to the hotel's origins as a lavish residence where entertaining was the norm. Simply walking around the lobby is a design-lover's dream, complete with hand-painted murals and frescoes that look as though they belong in a museum.

On the top floor, a breathtaking terrace awaits. Sip on a pisco sour while admiring the busy scene at Plaza de San Francisco below. You can also see Volcán Cayambe in the distance (on a clear day), but nothing beats the clear shot of the gothic towers of Basílica del Voto Nacional.

The Rooms

With only 31 rooms and suites across the property, guests enjoy a sense of seclusion and privacy. Since the building formerly served as a single family home, the guest rooms retain that homey feel, with elegant windows tucked behind heavy curtains. One of the most timeless features is the high, slightly coffered ceiling, which is adorned with intricate patterns and engraved edges.

If you’re not looking out at San Francisco Square from your room, expect epic views of the Virgin of El Panecillo—a massive hillside statue honoring Mother Mary. Each accommodation is unique in style, featuring distinct characteristics that are ripe with bespoke charm. Whether you book a luxury room or a signature suite, expect marble bathrooms with deep-set tubs and delicately stained glass windows.

The Food & Drink

Start each morning with Ecuadorian coffee, fresh fruit juices, pastries, and made-to-order eggs at a buffet-style breakfast that’s included in your stay. The elegant restaurant setting, with traditional white tablecloths, red booths, and floral curtains, sets a timeless scene. You can also enjoy breakfast in the garden area or have it delivered to your suite via room service.

In the evening, sip a dirty martini in the dark, wood-panelled bar before heading back into the main restaurant for a fine dining experience featuring a medley of Ecuadorian flavors. Spend time exploring the appetizer section, which offers everything from a trio of crispy empanadas to a bright, refreshing beet tartare. The ceviches are another highlight and signature Ecuadorian staple, and though there are a few different renditions to choose from, we recommend the shrimp. For your main course, choose from a variety of meat-forward mains, such as slow-roasted pork, grilled duck, or cacao-encrusted chicken.

In addition to standard amenities like Wi-Fi, laundry service, and 24-hour room service, Casa Gangotena also offers daily housekeeping with a thoughtful turndown service, valet parking, a rooftop lounge, a gourmet inclusive breakfast, and an exclusive Wellbeing Space where guests can book body treatments and select spa services.

Location & Neighborhood Recs

If you’re hoping to play tourist and walk to some of Quito’s best sites, Casa Gangotena is the ultimate home base. For starters, its location on the edge of Plaza de San Francisco is unbeatable, and you can literally walk out the front door of the hotel and into the square. On weekends, expect busy crowds, markets, and festivals, sometimes complete with live music and dancing. The famed Basilica and Convent of San Francisco is a mere one-minute walk across the square, and though the inside of the cathedral is breathtaking, make sure you walk up a tiny spiral staircase to the bell tower for some of the best views of the city. If you’re scared of heights, be prepared. There is also a lovely courtyard garden inside the church, which serves as a beautiful example of the city’s Spanish Colonial influences.

Another famous cathedral within walking distance of the hotel is La Compañía de Jesús, a 10-minute stroll from Casa Gangotena. After touring the ornate interiors, walk over to Independence Square for people watching. Other nearby highlights include visiting the Virgin of the Panecillo, the Museum of the City, and plenty of chocolate tasting. That said, the best and safest way to experience this city is to book a tour, and Casa Gangotena can set you up with a half- or full-day experience through Metropolitan Touring. If possible, request Maria as your guide—she’s the best!
