Retro Roots, Modern Mood: Inside Austin’s Carpenter Hotel

Hotel Snapshot

No doubt Austin’s always had mojo, but its unique verve translates best in its hotels that weave some vintage gravitas into the mix. Enter: Bunkhouse’s Carpenter Hotel, located like a consummate rest stop between the iconic Barton Springs swimming hole and the glitter and glam of downtown. Just off the hike and bike trail, steps from sister, SoCo-sited Bunkhouse masterpiece hotels (like Hotel San Jose and Hotel Magdalena), Carpenter Hotel sits in the bones of the renovated 1948 Carpenters Local 1266 Union Hall. Re-conceived by Specht Architects to embrace a touch of Mad Men era’s Mid-Century Modern dapperness and to retain the building’s original utilitarian earthiness, The Carpenter is undeniably hip. Hidden amid a grove of heritage pecan trees, the quiet, but sociable hotspot has a pool, garden, party pavilion, acclaimed restaurants, and lots of nooks for confabulating with friends.

Design & Character

The Carpenter’s vibe-y nucleus is its living room-like lobby and chatty coffee bar, set in the original union hall building. Vintage furnishings with Texan artifacts bring old school polish, but also a whisper of the past. Look for the replica antique bowling alley banquettes made from maple wood, as well as dazzlers like Kin Dining Chairs by Chris Liljenberg Halstrøm. Reclaimed pecan tree wood, original to the site, has been used to make the front desk and the coffee bar. Tunes from a select-your-own vinyl corner set a mood, while words from novelist Bud Shrake (“So far, so bueno”) impart local wisdom throughout the hotel.

The Rooms

Down a leafy path, through a garden, a new-built, concrete structure incorporates 93 guest rooms in various categories. Airy but minimalistic, stylish but spartan, the havens feature built-in wooden closets, clay masonry walls, concrete floors, and bathrooms sheathed in Barton Springs-hued blue tiles. Art by Jackie Lee Young showcases a range of lush, local, natural springs, imparting a soothing sense of place. Each hotel room boasts its own private terrace with floor-to-ceiling windows and a blackout door.

Food & Drink

You’ll find locals mingling with guests at Carpenters Hall, an all-day eatery.  The Mediterranean-style menu has Southern undertones—think: a sinfully gorge-worthy crème fraîche onion dip, served with house-made potato chips as well as fancier dishes, such as pan-roasted scallops with tomato ricotta gnocchi.  The Carpenter Coffee Bar, located in the lobby, offers an array of bites, snacks, caffeine concoctions, and on-tap wines and beers.

Knowledgeable staff seal the deal. An on-site Quonset Hut for parties, complimentary bubbly at happy hour, welcome gifts for pets, and in-room cocktail service upon request are just some of the hotel’s delights. The lobby’s shop sells a range of artsy items, including the  Carpenter Hotel’s peerless striped robe.
