Set the Scene
The Seaport has spent the last decade convincing New Yorkers it's more than the place you accidentally end up after work drinks go long. Sadie's is its latest argument.
The setup is really two restaurants in one. Inside, a two-level dining room handles proper sit-down meals from brunch through dinner. Outside, a 200-seat Garden Bar—one of the largest outdoor drinking operations in the city—runs on first-come, first-served basis, anchored by an 18-foot TV that turns any given weeknight into a watch party. (I ended up going the evening of England vs. Argentina's World Cup Game.) The dining room and patio connect the two, so an early dinner has a way of becoming a late one.
It wouldn't be an NYC dinner if it wasn't nearly 100 degrees and humid, which it was this evening. I pulled up and was met with an open, light-filled, and, crucially, air-conditioned dining room. The Garden Bar is the headline, but in mid-July, eating inside is the move, at least for cooling down a bit first.
What's the Food Like
Executive Chef Jeffrey Marks is working in New American comfort territory.
The ricotta toast, ordered for the table, went quickly and was pretty good—it was topped with some honey and salt which was the perfect sweet/salty combo.
I wasn't extremely hungry, so I opted for the wedge salad and fried zucchini from the appetizer menu as my meal of choice. The fried zucchini was crunchy, well-seasoned, and came with a delicious aioli dipping sauce. But the unsung hero was my wedge salad: prior to ordering, our waiter mentioned the blue cheese dressing is made in house, and it made all the difference. My friends ordered the chicken schnitzel and gnocchi, but I can't comment on how those dishes tasted (though the presentation of both were lovely.)
Let's Talk About the Drinks
I kept it simple: a dirty martini with vodka, then a glass of riesling. Both did their jobs. There's a full cocktail menu I didn't get deep into, built for the spritz-forward Garden Bar crowd—and a $10 spritz happy hour Monday through Friday, 3 to 6 p.m.
Final Thoughts
Sadie's isn't chasing a tasting-menu moment, but it doesn't need to. It's built for the group chat that can't agree on a plan: somewhere with room for everyone, a menu nobody will veto, and a TV big enough to justify staying for one more. On game days, come for the Garden Bar. While the food and service may not be absolutely mind-blowing, it's a great spot to catch up with some friends and see where the night takes you, whether it's to the plethora of bars nearby or the subway back home.
