Hotel sanctuaries, clinical studios, walk-ins promising instant glow — they abound. The Skin Lab by Augustinus Bader is a class apart. Founded in 2018 by German-born biomedical scientist and physician Augustinus Bader, the brand quickly ascended from industry secret to global obsession. The Rich Cream and The Serum became modern icons, embraced by celebrities, editors, and anyone serious about their complexion. The Skin Lab is where that cult following translates into an in-person experience.
Perched on the top floor of The Webster in SoHo, the setting feels like a chic Parisian apartment, complete with a terrace overlooking the street scene below. Copper accents and Bader blue punctuate the space, while cream sofas invite you to linger before and after your treatment.
There is only one treatment suite here, and that’s what makes this place so distinctive and insider-y. When I visit, the space is entirely mine. I settle in with a cappuccino or a glass of wine, take in the quiet, and let the outside world fade away.
Desireé Delia, Lead Esthetician and Augustinus Bader’s North America trainer, runs the room with confidence and warmth. A former professional makeup artist turned esthetician and Reiki master, she blends technical expertise with intuition. She greets me like a regular and plays the role of host effortlessly.
The Treatment
Each appointment begins with a thorough skin analysis. Desireé examines my complexion closely, asks questions about my skincare routine and concerns, and builds the treatment from there. Nothing is preset. You don’t book a specific facial here — you book time, and place your skin entirely in Desireé’s hands.
Some days my skin needs hydration. Other visits call for refinement or brightening. She adjusts in real time, layering products and techniques with hands that feel nothing short of magical.
The facial is results-driven without being clinical. Rather, thanks to her deep, sculpting massage strokes, I’m deeply relaxed. There’s precision to it — but also calm. I leave looking sharper, more even, and visibly rested.
Consistency is a theme here. Desireé is firm about maintenance: monthly facials, disciplined home care, hydration — all are nonnegotiable if you want your skin to perform.
The Skin Lab doesn’t overwhelm with options or theatrics. It’s focused, refined, and a true hideaway that every beauty aficionado needs to know about.
