Hotel Snapshot
If you ask me, Arosa, Switzerland, is severely underappreciated. After spending time in some of the Alps’ biggest names—St. Moritz, the Dolomites—it surprised me how few international travelers make it here. It has the same stunning scenery and grand hotels, yet far fewer crowds. Right at the end of the Schanfigg Valley in eastern Switzerland, it’s chic in that classic Swiss way but relaxed enough that it’s nowhere near flashy.
As for a bit of history, in the late 19th century, travelers came here for the climate—clear air, high altitude, and plenty of sunshine. Over time, the destination shifted into a full-fledged mountain resort, with large, wellness-focused hotels. These days, it’s firmly a year-round destination: winter centers around the Arosa Lenzerheide ski area, while summer is all about hiking, biking, and enjoying Obersee Lake.
That balance of activity and calm carries over into the town’s hotels, most notably the Valsana Hotel Arosa, part of the Tschuggen Collection. From personal experience, there’s something refreshing about a mountain property that doesn’t lean too heavily into rustic clichés. Here, it’s modern yet cozy and really leans into the surroundings. Sustainability is also a huge part of the property: the building is completely CO₂-neutral, powered by Swiss-engineered systems including an ice battery, and everything from furniture to toiletries is locally sourced.
Design & Atmosphere
The design at the Valsana is modern alpine rather than traditional chalet, which can be hard to find in Swiss mountain towns. You won’t find heavy wood paneling or massive fur blankets—instead, there’s a lighter palette and lots of natural materials that make the spaces feel calm and up to date. Floor-to-ceiling windows bring the mountains inside, and the main lounge flows into the restaurant and bar, creating a relaxed, social hub for guests to mingle. (Plus, the tea bar and afternoon cookies are a nice touch.)
Rooms
Rooms have the same understated approach as the rest of the property. They’re modern-alpine with oak floors, soft neutrals, and natural materials, while touches like patterned textiles, cozy seating areas, and industrial‑chic details keep things from feeling too minimal.
There’s a good range, from Lifestyle and Panorama doubles to loft-style junior suites with terraces and open living areas. Most have balconies or terraces that frame the mountains or Obersee Lake, which makes a morning coffee or evening glass of wine hard to resist. Thoughtful extras, like rain showers, king-size beds, curated vinyl records, and minibars stocked with local treats, make rooms even cozier.
Food & Drink
Dining centers around Twist, the hotel’s open-plan restaurant that blends into the lounge and bar. The menu leans seasonal and regionally inspired, with lighter alpine dishes that feel in step with the wellness-forward tone of the hotel.
Breakfast is solid and straightforward—fresh pastries, seasonal fruit, and good coffee—perfect for fueling a morning of skiing, hiking, or a walk around Obersee Lake. Lunch is similarly approachable, with grain bowls, fresh salads, and seasonal vegetable dishes designed to be filling but light, the kind of meal that doesn’t slow you down. Dinner leans into regional ingredients with a contemporary touch: Alpine fish, local meats, and seasonal vegetables are presented simply but thoughtfully, and the wine list focuses on Swiss producers.
The Tschuggen Collection also has Moving Mountains menus at each property. This offers a more structured, plant-based option for those who want something intentional. It’s a five-course tasting experience that emphasizes seasonal, locally sourced ingredients—whole grains, legumes, and vegetables—prepared in a way that’s flavorful without feeling heavy. Dishes avoid refined sugars and flours, leaning on complex, nutrient-dense alternatives. It changes seasonally, so what’s on offer will shift depending on the produce and the chef’s choices, but the focus remains the same: a thoughtful, regional approach to plant-based dining.
Amenities & Activities
Valsana makes it easy to keep moving or fully unwind. At the spa, guests can find a relaxation pool, outdoor whirlpool, saunas, steam rooms, and treatment rooms for massages and holistic therapies. I. The fitness room is compact but covers the basics—cardio machines, weights, and a bit of space for stretching—plus there are occasional yoga or movement sessions if you feel like a guided reset.
Outdoor options are just as easy to tap into. Across the street, the impressive indoor tennis center has two carpet courts open year-round, whether you’re looking for a casual rally or a lesson with a coach. There’s also a small play area with a trampoline, table tennis, and table football, which keeps younger guests (or playful adults) entertained. And of course, the mountains are right there: skiing and snowboarding in winter at Arosa Lenzerheide, hiking and mountain biking in summer, and walking around Obersee Lake at any time of year.
Location & Neighborhood
Valsana sits just at the edge of the forest in Arosa, a town that somehow feels both tucked away and perfectly placed. Step outside, and you’re immediately within walking distance of the promenade, with its mix of cafés, bakeries, and boutique shops. Obersee Lake is just a short stroll away, making it great for strolls any time of day. The town itself has a calm, slightly old-school Swiss charm: small restaurants serve everything from traditional fondue and fresh Alpine fish to seasonal vegetables and pastries, and there’s a sprinkling of shops selling local crafts, chocolate, and mountain gear.
Arosa isn’t on every traveler’s radar yet—and that’s part of its appeal—but Valsana puts you right in the middle of everything this area does best.
