Hotel Snapshot

Some destinations work hard to impress you… Laguna Beach doesn't have to. Southern California has perfected a certain brand of hospitality that whispers  wealth rather than shouts it, and Laguna has long been the poster child for that effortless appeal.

Laid-back yet impossibly polished, the seaside enclave has attracted artists, surfers, creatives, and discerning travelers for decades. There's something almost siren-like about it—people come for a weekend and find themselves planning their return before they've even checked out.

And few properties embody that magnetic pull quite like Surf & Sand Laguna Beach.

Design & Character

Perched directly on one of California's most coveted stretches of coastline, the resort places the shoreline at center stage. Here, sunsets become nightly entertainment, the surf serves as a constant soundtrack, and the line between indoors and out practically disappears.

From the moment you arrive, Surf & Sand feels less like a beachfront resort and more like a Mediterranean palazzo perched above the shore. Classical influences blend seamlessly with contemporary California design, while carefully curated works by artists including Eric Zener, Geoffrey Gersten, and Kelsey Irvin lend the space an understated sophistication.

But the true showstopper reveals itself almost immediately.

As you move toward reception, the horizon suddenly unfolds before you: a cinematic reveal framed by soaring archways and expansive windows. The effect is enough to stop even the most seasoned traveler in their tracks.

The open-air concierge desk flows naturally into a living room-style lobby outfitted with bespoke furnishings, curated artwork, and a library-inspired display of coffee table tomes, including Van Gogh's Flowers, Mondrian, and Brancusi: New York, 1913–2013. The result evokes the feeling of stepping into your quietly wealthy friend's home, complete with a knack for collecting conversation-worthy trinkets.

The Rooms

Fresh off a thoughtful renovation, the resort's 165 guest rooms and suites deliver coastal luxury exactly as one hopes they would: oceanfront balconies, soaking tubs, natural wood finishes, oversized showers, and an aesthetic that lets the view do most of the talking.

What truly sets the rooms apart is their proximity to the water. As evening settles in, floor-to-ceiling glass doors slide open to private balconies perched directly above the shoreline. The rhythmic crash of the waves becomes your personal white noise machine. Sleeping here feels a bit like spending the night aboard a luxury yacht, minus the seasickness.

Turndown service arrives each evening with thoughtful touches, including Edition Voyage Linen & Pillow Spray, a soothing blend of lavender, sweet orange, and frankincense that somehow makes an already exceptional night's sleep even better.

(Call me old-fashioned, but proper turndown service remains one of the clearest indicators of a true five-star hotel experience.)

Food & Drink

If there's one place you'll inevitably find yourself lingering long after sunset, it's Splashes. The resort's signature restaurant  sits so close to the surf that dinner often arrives accompanied by the soundtrack of waves breaking just below your table.

Helmed by Executive Chef Ron Fougeray, the menu leans heavily into coastal California cuisine, showcasing pristine seafood and seasonal ingredients (think: bluefin tuna crudo with lemongrass coconut cream, seared scallops, and a hearty 10 oz. Wagyu New York—surf & turf style at its finest) but one dish continues to live rent-free in my mind: the lobster bisque… exceptional hardly covers it.  Silky, rich, and layered with flavor, it's quite possibly the best tableside lobster bisque I've ever had—a bold statement, perhaps, but one I'm entirely comfortable making.

Pair it with the Wave Cooler, a refreshing mix of gin, cucumber, tarragon, mint, fresh lemon juice, and sparkling brut, then settle in for one of Laguna's legendary sunsets. Between the view and service from staff you'll genuinely miss once you leave (Alex, you rocked!), it's exactly the sort of dinner that reminds you why people keep returning to this stretch of California coastline.

Spa & Wellness

Surf & Sand's recent refresh extended well beyond the guest rooms.

At the revitalized Aquaterra Spa, wellness takes on the same coastal perspective that defines the rest of the property. The spa features eight treatment rooms, many offering uninterrupted views of the shoreline, allowing guests to remain connected to their surroundings even while indulging in a massage or facial.

The treatment menu ranges from restorative massages to the spa's signature offerings, including the Ageless Glow Facial, making it just as tempting to carve out an afternoon indoors as it is to spend one stretched out by the water. It's the kind of place that gently encourages you to slow down—something Laguna Beach has always done remarkably well.

The Amenities

Your morning coffee is just steps away at Pacific Perk, serving artisan pastries (don't skip the almond croissant or blueberry scone), lattes sweetened with locally sourced syrups and honey, plus homemade gelato when an afternoon pick-me-up sounds more appealing than another espresso.

The oceanfront pool is equally tempting. It's the sort of place where you intend to spend an hour and somehow end up staying all afternoon, alternating between a good book, the whirlpool, and watching the tide roll in.

Right next door, the boutique offers a thoughtfully curated mix of beach hats, sundresses, woven totes, kitten heels, and hotel merch. Fair warning: I left with one of the sweatshirts.

Location & Neighborhood

One of the Surf & Sand’s greatest perks is that you're just a short walk from downtown Laguna Beach, making it easy to swap pool time for a little exploring.

For dinner, Alessa is well worth the stroll. The old-school Italian spot serves fresh pastas with the kind of hospitality that keeps locals coming back. Order whatever ravioli special they're running—I still think about the brown butter sage version we shared and immediately regretted not getting my own.

South of Nick’s Laguna Beach is another neighborhood staple. Dependable in the best way, it's the place for a lively Mexican meal, rooftop cocktails, or simply a meal where you know everything will be good.

If your night calls for something a little less polished, make your way to The Sandpiper Lounge… better known as the "Dirty Bird." Expect live music, a packed dance floor, and some of the best people-watching in town. Between the cafés, boutiques, and coffee shops lining Coast Highway, there's plenty to keep you lingering long after checkout.
