When you plan a trip to Monte-Carlo, a certain level of grandeur is expected. At Hôtel Métropole Monte-Carlo, that expectation is met before you even reach the front desk. Behind imposing gates, Belle Époque architecture and Roman statues give way to interiors layered in gilded details, plush velvet seating, and clever architectural secrets—even the washrooms are a discovery, tucked behind trick bookshelf doors.
In deliberate contrast to the hotel’s moody opulence, The Spa Métropole by Guerlain offers a lighter, more introspective counterpoint. Architect Samy Itani traded the drama upstairs for a palette of cream, sand, and soft gold, creating a sanctuary that feels airy and quietly transportive.
Just beyond the entrance, three silk-paper sculptures by Claudine Drai float within the space—delicate, poetic, and deeply meditative. They anchor the design in a sense of emotional stillness, proving that in Monaco, luxury doesn't always have to be a spectacle.
Guerlain’s signature honeybee emblem appears subtly throughout the ten treatment rooms. In mine, a small crystal bee rested at the end of the bed—the kind of high-maintenance, effortless polish that defines the brand’s nature-driven philosophy.
The Wellness Breakdown
The suites are oversized, designed less like clinical treatment rooms and more like private apartments, complete with nooks for lingering over citrus-infused tea post-treatment. Guerlain’s Abeille Royale line—rooted in honey-based research—anchors the menu, while more advanced offerings, like the coveted Black Orchid facial, cater to those seeking deeper, results-driven care.
On the facial front, the Monaco Glow lived up to its name. It’s designed to mimic the specific, high-altitude radiance of a day spent on a Riva boat—using white quartz tools and delicate cotton veils to leave the skin looking less like it had a facial and more like it had a holiday.
Somewhere between the white quartz and the cotton veils, the relaxation became almost physical. During the final cooling phase, the slow, circular movements felt auditory—like bubbles rising to the surface and echoing softly between my ears. It was an unexpected sensation and incredibly soothing.
The Final Touches
As the session came to a close, I was brought warm lemon water and a small dish of diced pineapple while my therapist walked me through a personalized skin care prescription to maintain that Riviera radiance long after leaving the zip code.
Still floating, I wandered over to The Art of Guerlain makeup vanity—an ultra-luxury setup offering everything from tailored applications to medical-grade pedicures by the industry’s "foot virtuoso," Bastien Gonzalez.
In the women’s locker room, the heat experiences offered a final ritual: a slow unwind in the sauna and steam room, followed by an invigorating ice shower. It’s the kind of sequence that leaves you fully reset—rested, restored, and very much in step with Monte-Carlo’s version of luxury.
