Sometimes you just want a hotel that blends in seamlessly with the neighborhood it’s located in. Casa Tenue is one such hotel. Located in the Roma Norte neighborhood, it’s an intimate retreat for travelers who want to slow down. The eight-room boutique sits just off the convivial Plaza Rio de Janeiro in a meticulously restored 1904 townhouse, and from the moment you walk in, it doesn't feel like a hotel so much as it feels like someone's home… and a very well-designed and highly Instagrammable home at that.
Design & Character
Architecture studio Vertebral and interior design firm Habitación 116 handled the restoration, working with what was already an extraordinary building; one that had lived previous lives as a private residence, an art studio, a community center, and an artist residency before becoming the hotel it is today. The gallery Ñú curates an ever-evolving art program throughout the property, so contemporary canvases pop off organic walls of stone and limestone-washed chukum in a way that feels thoughtful rather than purely decorative, creating the rare atmosphere of a private collection you get to sleep inside.
The Rooms
Each of the eight suites carries its own name—some honoring the area's creative luminaries, like Remedios (Varo) and Ulises (Lima)—and its own distinct personality, though all share a warmth that makes guests feel more like they've retreated to a mountain hideaway than landed in the middle of one of the world's busiest cities. Throughout: copper soaking tubs (some on private terraces!), built-in window seats ideal for quiet reading, and en-suite bathrooms clad in stone and wood. The ground-floor suite comes with a private courtyard, and the two penthouses, Desierto and Teo (the suite I stayed in), offer lushly landscaped private terraces and open-air copper tubs surrounded by greenery—an extraordinary amenity in any city, let alone one as lively as CDMX.
Food & Drink
The hotel offers a complimentary light breakfast each morning (including pastries from the nearby cult-favorite Panadería Rosetta). For all other meals, guests step directly into one of Mexico City's most celebrated dining neighborhoods—a distinct feature rather than a shortcoming. Spots like Rosetta, Máximo Bistro, and Em Restaurante are all within easy reach; make sure to snag a res well ahead of time. And of course, you’re in Mexico City, where the hole-in-the-wall joints rival (and honestly, clear) the hyped spots any day of the week. You’ve got options.
Spa & Wellness Scoop
There isn’t an on-site spa or gym. This is the kind of hotel where the wellness offering is more about the room itself—the copper soaking tub, the window seat, the general hush of it all—than anything programmatic. Roma Norte's plazas and leafy streets do the rest.
The Amenities
No pool, no spa, no fitness center. What Casa Tenue offers instead is considered, soulful design; curated art; and some of the city's most atmospheric rooms. For guests who want a quieter, more personal experience than a larger hotel provides, those trade-offs will feel entirely worthwhile.
Plus, those pastries from Panaderia Rosetta I mentioned earlier? You’ll just have to worry about competing for those goodies with your fellow hotel guests rather than the troves of tourists who’ll wait for literal hours in line at the bakery’s physical location two minutes down the road.
The Neighborhood
I always tell people that Roma Norte is a CDMX neighborhood that suits a first-time visitor as much as it does a frequent visitor. The sidewalks are tree-lined, street food is plentiful (special shoutout to Jenni’s Quesadillas, just a 3-minute walk down the street), and there are tons of art galleries and boutiques to explore before heading to your evening dinner res… I mean, it’s a neighborhood that feels both elegant and effortless. It’s a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Casa Tenue sits less than 15 minutes' walk from the Angel of Independence and is also easily walkable to Chapultepec Castle, the Museo de Arte Popular, and so much more. It is, simply put, one of the best-located boutique hotels in Mexico City.

Gathering Spaces: The “breakfast library,” as Casa Tenue calls it. It served as the property’s dining area, reading room, co-working space, and lounge. The coolest part? It’s situated in one of the oldest stone basements in the Roma neighborhood.
