Hotel Snapshot

Everyone knows Capri, but fewer people make it across the bay to Ischia. (Luckily, locals would prefer it to stay that way.) The largest island in the Gulf of Naples, Ischia has been a thermal retreat since (quite literally) antiquity. Roman aristocrats sailed over for the volcanic mineral waters bubbling up through the rock, which are the same waters that still fill the island's spas, hot springs, and beachfront fumaroles today. It’s less than an hour by ferry or hydrofoil from Naples, with Capri and the Sorrentine coastline just across the water.

While Capri has built its reputation on glamour and boat days, Ischia is much slower, calmer, and quieter, even though it’s about five times the size. Thermal parks, mineral-rich beaches, vineyards on volcanic soil, and a lush, green landscape have stayed protected by islanders from overdevelopment for generations. Locals still talk about "taking the waters" the way their grandparents did.

Botania Relais & Spa sits right inside this tranquil Italian island, tucked into over seven acres of Mediterranean garden. The property feels more like a sprawling, private estate than a resort, with rooms and villas dotted around. Flowers, stone paths, olive trees, and quiet spots with sea views can be found just about anywhere. The sandy bay of San Montano is a five-minute walk, and the Negombo thermal gardens (one of the island's best-known thermal parks) are even closer. Here, guests feel like they’re right in the heart of the island, surrounded by flowers, plants, and thermal baths, as well as understated luxury Italian boutique hotels know best.

Design & Character

The Polito family has run Botania for decades, and the design has always taken its cues from what's already on the property: volcanic thermal water, Mediterranean greenery, and a lot of natural light. The architecture leans into white, low-slung villas, with sage green and powder pink accents, stone floors, and furnished terraces that look out onto the garden. It's a classic, natural look with just enough color to make it blend in with the surrounding nature.

What's more, Botania also runs its own organic farm on-site, growing about 70% of the vegetables that end up on the menu, and backs that up with a sustainability program that includes solar panels, a plastic-free policy, and participation in a global sustainability certification.

An honorable mention to the amphitheater carved into the garden, used for the occasional live music night, and the stone paths that thread the whole property together. You could walk the grounds for twenty minutes without crossing the same spot twice.

The Rooms

Botania spreads its 40 rooms and suites across signature categories and a handful of larger configurations, each named for the plants and flowers that fill the garden outside. Superior rooms are cozy and comfortable, while the top-tier suites (two being Ortensia and Gelsomino) are much larger, with private terraces, sea views, and, in some cases, a private rooftop pool. Several categories come with their own mini-pool or jacuzzi on the terrace, which matters more here than at most hotels, since outdoor space is where Botania really delivers. Bathrooms are finished in Italian marble or patterned ceramic, and views swap between garden and sea depending on the category. Pro tip: Have coffee at dawn on the patio and enjoy the sounds of the birds and bugs. It’ll remind you of just how in tune the property is with nature.

The Food & Drink

Three restaurants give Botania more range than you might expect. Il Corbezzolo handles breakfast, lunch, and dinner on a bright terrace, with Chef Tommaso Luongo's fish and local meat dishes drawing on Ischia's culinary tradition. (The local fish entree is not to be missed.) Breakfast itself is a full buffet, with handmade pastries, a juice bar, Italian specialties (yes, pizza at breakfast), and even a wine station. As mentioned earlier, about 70% of the vegetables used come straight from the hotel's own garden, with the rest sourced from local producers, so every bite is fresh and flavorful at every hour of the day.

Il Mirto is perhaps the star of the show, since it's the first restaurant on the island to be awarded a Michelin Green Star, an honor reserved for those leading the way on sustainability. The idea behind it is an entirely vegetarian and vegan menu built around bringing the earth's own ingredients back to the center of the table. The restaurant looks directly onto its own organic garden through wide windows and a terrace, so the produce on the plate is often growing within view of where you're eating it. Chef Tommaso Luongo leans on Ischia's farming traditions for inspiration, working with zero-kilometer suppliers, cutting food waste, and going fully plastic-free in the kitchen. It's open for dinner only, and reservations are worth making ahead, since the room is small and the experience is meant to be enjoyed for hours.

Nonna Marì sits up on a hill, right among holm oaks with an incredible view of the sea, and represents the kind of home-style cooking Botania built its identity around: simple, genuine dishes meant to be shared, served in a setting that feels like someone's actual kitchen. The cooking class here was a true highlight of my stay, and it's something I'd recommend to every single guest. The chef and team leading it are so warm, and the meal we prepared was one of my favorites in Italy (which says a lot).

La Grotta, the hotel's cave bar dug into the tuff stone, pours cocktails built around the wild herbs growing in the park, with live music on weekends. For something more casual, guests can head to Iris Bar by the pool and enjoy cocktails, wine, and a selection of mouthwatering bites.

The Amenities

The Garden Spa anchors the wellness side of Botania, with an indoor thermal pool, a cold plunge, and a Turkish bath set inside a natural cave, plus treatment rooms for massages and skincare programs. Outside, two hot spring pools fed by Ischia's mineral waters sit right in the garden, along with a semi-Olympic outdoor pool, an outdoor gym, and a panoramic sauna with views over the garden and sea. A fitness room with Technogym equipment rounds out the daily options, and the hotel also offers complimentary morning yoga from mid-May through September. On request, guests can book cooking classes, private yoga sessions, a personal trainer, or even a watercolor class.

Location & Neighborhood

San Montano's sandy bay is Botania's private beach, a five-minute walk from the property, with the Negombo thermal gardens even closer. The hotel also works closely with local farmers, fishermen, and artisans across the island, and it shows up everywhere from the dinner menu to the excursions on offer. Hiking with local guides up Monte Epomeo, the Aragonese Castle at sunset, and the botanical garden La Mortella (known for its weekend classical concerts) are all easy day trips from here.

Plus, Botania's concierge desk can arrange private boat charters to Capri, Procida, or the Amalfi Coast, a great way to see more of this picture-perfect (and still slightly under the radar) island.
