Hotel Snapshot

The Lanesborough—part of Oetker Hotels, whose portfolio includes the iconic Eden Rock - St Barths—is a bastion of classic London luxury. Situated on the southeastern corner of Hyde Park, on the border of Belgravia and Knightsbridge, the Grade II-listed landmark was originally built as a stately mansion, then known as Lanesborough House, by James Lane, the last Viscount Lanesborough. The building, later reconstructed in the Regency style by William Wilkins, the architect behind the National Gallery, went on to serve as St. George’s Hospital before being converted into a luxury hotel in 1991, welcoming royalty, dignitaries, and celebrities (ahem, Cher and Pamela Anderson) throughout its distinguished history.

Palatial and exquisitely posh, the five-star property is an old-money institution. Generous in its proportions, opulent decor, and highly polished service, it’s a place for travelers with quid to spend, who aren’t impressed by flashy, nouveau gimmicks. From the doormen wearing hats and coats to the extravagant interiors and first-class amenities, The Lanesborough is an enduring peak behind the velvet curtain of the London that’s inhabited by high society—dress codes mean something, in-room butler-call buttons sit astride thermostat controls, formality isn’t a fraught word, and the resident cat, Lilibet, is named after the late Queen.

Design & Character

The Lanesborough’s interiors, masterfully designed by the late Alberto Pinto with a team of over 300 artisans, are a testament to the timeless appeal of old-school glamour, elegance, and rich character. Many of William Wilkins’s original architectural elements—namely the entrance foyer, corridors, and stairwells—remain on display for guests to admire, alongside hand-painted walls and ceilings. Each communal space is more lavish than the last, decked with crystal chandeliers, marble, glossy cabinetry, and sumptuous furnishings. Even the hallways leading to the rooms are adorned with antiques and museum-quality art, part of a 2,000-piece onsite collection sourced from British aristocrats of the 18th century.

The Rooms

The rooms and suites—all of which, it’s worth repeating, come with dedicated 24/7 butler service to ensure every whim is catered to—are individually decorated in a lavish style befitting the rest of the magnificent hotel. Luxurious and classically elegant, they also feature modern upgrades, including responsive technology, flat-screen smart TVs discreetly hidden behind works of art, and heated bathroom floors. Soaking tubs are, unsurprisingly, standard.

Food & Drink

The Lanesborough Grill, helmed by Michelin-starred chef Shay Cooper, invites patrons to enjoy the finest British fare for breakfast, lunch, Sunday roast, afternoon tea, and dinner beneath a glass-domed ceiling and sparkling chandeliers. Plush rugs, Greek-inspired reliefs,  classical moldings, and elegant furnishings complement the menu, which includes classics like beef Wellington and line-caught seabass with caviar, as well as when sipping Earl Grey and nibbling delicate sweets and savories during Bridgerton afternoon tea.

The Library Bar, a private club–inspired den complete with leather armchairs and shelves stocked with stunning Rizzoli books, is renowned for its masterful British cocktails and curated selection of spirits. In the evenings, a pianist tickles the ivories while a well-coiffed crowd sips classic cocktails and aged whisky. It’s also a perfect spot for a more relaxed—by The Lanesborough’s standards, at least—but decidedly upmarket lunch, whether that’s fish and chips or a classic club sandwich. The Withdrawing Room, ornamented by hand-painted trompe-l’œil marbling, feels like a luxurious living room—perfect for tea and a midday sweet treat. For an alfresco experience, the Garden Room Terrace offers a charming setting for bubbly and small bites.

Amenities

The perks of staying at The Lanesborough are extensive. Guests enjoy 24/7 butler service—the only hotel in London that can make such a claim—which means complimentary unpacking, welcome treats, pressing, dog walking, bowls of fresh fruit restocked daily, and just about any whim catered to at any hour. Tiny travelers are equally indulged, with sweets and stuffed animals, in-room movie nights, Xbox setups, junior butler “boot camps,” and even treasure hunts.

Spa & Wellness Scoop

Accessible via a maze of impeccably decorated corridors and a private elevator, the 18,000-square-foot Lanesborough Club & Spa—open to both guests and members—is appropriately grand. The ladies’ locker room alone rivals entire wellness centers at other hotels. The relaxation lounge is outfitted with reclining leather chairs, dried fruits and nuts, fresh fruit, glass bottles of still and sparkling water, and everything needed to brew a perfect cup of tea. Facilities also include a hydrotherapy pool, saunas, steam rooms, a gym, and a fitness studio for reformer Pilates classes. The treatment menu ranges from therapeutic massages and body scrubs to bespoke Tata Harper facials, with high-tech wellness upgrades such as non-invasive muscle toning and IV therapy.

Location & Neighborhood Recs

The Lanesborough boasts an unbeatable location at Hyde Park Corner, steps from the entrance gate, making London’s largest green space your backyard. It’s also an easy walk to Buckingham Palace and Knightsbridge for designer shopping at Harrods.
