Hotel Snapshot

The drive up Torrey Pines Road doesn't quite prepare you for what's ahead. Technically, you're in suburban San Diego (UCSD is literally across the street), but a quick turn down a long driveway leads to a hotel that sprawls out on 10 acres of garden courtyards, with palm trees, adobe archways, and open-air fireplaces throughout. Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa has a hacienda aesthetic and an old-school, Spanish-inspired San Diego vibe that's hard to find these days.

A lot of that comes down to the history. In 1948, Bill and Ruth Black established Blackhorse Farm here — a thoroughbred breeding and training estate on 248 acres with a half-mile exercise track and close ties to Del Mar Racetrack, just a few minutes away. When the property was developed into a hotel in 2004, the original 1940s stable structures were kept: the lobby and Trading Post Café occupy that building today, with the original high-set windows still in place. Mustangs & Burros, the property's main restaurant and bar, was once the tack room.

Design & Character

The Spanish Colonial aesthetic runs throughout, complete with terracotta tile floors, wood-beam ceilings, ironwork details, and adobe archways that connect the buildings and courtyards. The gardens are hands-down one of Estanica’s best features. The acres of land are filled with courtyards, lemon trees, swaying palms, open-air fireplaces, and tiled fountains that are dotted around the low-slung buildings. The hotel also has its own apiary and chef's garden that work directly with the kitchen. What’s more, Estancia has a rotating collection of outdoor sculptures and installations along the pathways, which gives the grounds a little something extra to explore.

Inside, the lobby has a large fireplace with seating and a bar that gets lively on weekends, especially after weddings. The Trading Post Café & Bar sits in that same building, a great spot to grab a coffee and a breakfast burrito before heading out to explore the rest of the property.

The Rooms

Estancia has 210 rooms and suites spread across the property, and there's a good range depending on what you want. All rooms are spacious and well-designed, with cozy beds, sitting areas, wood and suede furnishings, Turkish cotton linens, and a much-needed Keurig.

Room types range from standard guest rooms to full suites, with the standout being the Estate Garden View Rooms — they come with private balconies that look directly out over the garden courtyards, and they're worth it. The suites step up in size and are a great pick for longer stays, wedding weekends, or anyone who wants a bit more room to spread out. There are also pet-friendly rooms with private lawn access, which is a nice touch if you're bringing a dog along.

The Food & Drink

Estancia has five dining options on property, and they cater to every taste bud. The anchor is Mustangs & Burros (that same former tack room), now a rancho-style restaurant with a great outdoor patio, fireplace, and Southwestern-inspired plates. The menu has bold, regional flavors, and the happy hour lures both guests and locals, which is always a good sign. It's the most social spot on the property, especially on weekends. If you happen to be there on a Tuesday, the weekly Baja Taco Night is worth planning around. Think handmade tacos paired with hand-shaken margaritas, rare tequilas, and garden-inspired craft cocktails.

Greenfinch Restaurant is the place for breakfast, brunch, and lunch, with a California-coastal menu that pulls from the hotel's own apiary and chef's garden. The patio seating looks out over the gardens, and it's a nice way to start the day. For something more casual, the Trading Post Café & Bar is right inside the original stable building and is good for a quick coffee or bite before you head out. The Palma Bar & Grill is the poolside option, handling drinks and bites while you're out by the water. (Get the hot dog, you won’t regret it.) And then there's the Remedy Lounge, an apothecary-inspired elixir lounge and San Diego's first non-alcoholic hotel bar, which is worth a visit whether you're drinking or not. With five options on-site, there's really no reason to leave, and on a long weekend, you probably won't want to.

The Amenities

The spa at Estancia is a full operation, with massages, facials, body treatments, couples rooms, and a menu that covers just about everything. The facilities include a Eucalyptus steam room and an outdoor saltwater whirlpool, and there's a relaxation lounge to decompress. It's open to the public as well as hotel guests, which means it's worth booking in advance. The main outdoor pool is heated and saltwater, with lounge chairs for everyone.

Beyond the spa and pool, the property has a fitness center, its own apiary and chef's garden, and a collection of outdoor art installations along the garden pathways. For celebrations of any kind, there's a huge event space with full catering on-site — one of the larger setups of any boutique hotel in the area.

Location & Neighborhood

Estancia sits at the northern edge of La Jolla, right beside Torrey Pines Golf Course (a must-visit, even for non-golfers). La Jolla Cove is about 15 minutes south, La Jolla Shores Beach is 10 minutes, and Del Mar Racetrack is about 10 minutes north. The area is one of the best in San Diego for a mix of outdoor activities, good food, and things to actually do beyond the beach.

Speaking of the beach, La Jolla Shores is the one to start with. It's a mile-long stretch of white sand with calm waves, good for swimming, kayaking, and surfing, and it's the main launching point for kayak tours through the sea caves at the La Jolla Underwater Park. La Jolla Cove is smaller and more scenic, great for snorkeling and for watching the sea lion colonies that hang out on the rocks.

For hiking, Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is 10 minutes north and has some of the best coastal trails in Southern California. The Razor Point Trail is the one to do — ocean views the whole way, and some of the rarest pine trees in the country. It's an easy two hours and a solid way to start a morning before coming back for a long lunch at Mustangs & Burros.

Whether you want to do a lot or nothing at all, Estancia makes both feel like a good idea.
